With Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Steven Spielberg and George Lucas have created a funny, fun, meaningless movie that is well-enough crafted to be satisfying for children and adults. Cate Blanchett's powerful presence drives the film as the brilliant Russian scientist determined to use Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) for her own political means. She also carries off one of the most improbable sword-fighting scenes ever, rendering it both impressive and hilarious.
Ford also delivers many thrills, all the more exciting now that he's over sixty. Ironically, his age turns out to be his biggest asset. Watching the handsome codger run up boxes of weapons like he's twenty-three delivers a wonderful fantasy to the aging boomers the film is apparently oriented towards that remaining forever young is really possible.
Full of wild stunts, creepy insects, and tongue-in-cheek humor, this film appeals even to people like me, who find most action movies duller than dimes.
My 11-year-old and 6-year-old agreed: "It's better than Ironman."
Playing at theatres all over Vancouver.
